DICK KING-SMITH
Ronald Gordon King-Smith (pseudoniem Dick King-Smith) (1922-2011) was een zeer productieve schrijver van kinderboeken. Hij bedacht onder andere het karakter ‘Babe’, dat wij kennen als de hoofdpersoon uit de gelijknamige film of uit het boek ‘The Sheep-pig’ (in de USA uitgekomen onder de titel ‘Babe, the Gallant Pig’. Mr King-Smith won veel prijzen met zijn kinderboeken en hij werd vele malen onderscheiden.
Dick King-Smith werd geboren in 1922. Hij woonde in het westen van Groot-Brittannië, waar zijn vader de directeur was van meerdere papierfabrieken. Hij was soldaat in de Tweede Wereldoorlog (onder andere in Italië) en hij was 20 jaar lang boer in Engeland. Daarna werd hij onderwijzer aan een basisschool; in die periode begon hij met het schrijven van kinderboeken. Mr King-Smith schreef in totaal meer dan 100 kinderboeken.
Dick King-Smith was getrouwd en hij had drie kinderen. Na de dood van zijn vrouw hertrouwde hij. Mr King-Smith trad veel op in TV-programma’s (vooral in kinderprogramma’s over dieren). Hij stierf in 2011 in zijn huis in de buurt van de Engelse stad Bath, waar hij jaren woonde.
