Michael Morpurgo (1943) is een beroemde Engelse schrijver, vooral van kinderboeken. Hij heeft veel beroemde volksverhalen en verhalen over beroemde personen bewerkt tot kinderboeken (Robin Hood, King Arthur, Beowulf, Sir Gawain, enzovoort). Morpurgo won veel prijzen en hij werd de officiële kinderboekenschrijver in Groot-Brittannië van 2003 tot 2005.
Morpurgo was de zoon van een actrice en acteur; hij hoorde pas over zijn biologische vader op zijn 19e (toen hij met zijn moeder een film zag waarin die acteur speelde). Zijn schooltijd bracht hij door op meerdere kostscholen: een ongelukkige tijd waar hij later veel over schreef. Na zijn studie aan de Universiteit van Londen was Michael Morpurgo een paar jaar leraar, waarna hij fulltime schrijver werd.
De onderwerpen van Morpurgo zijn zeer uiteenlopend, maar hij heeft vaak veel aandacht voor de natuur, de geschiedenis van Groot-Brittannië, oude mythen en sagen en problemen van jongeren (met ziekte en dood, met liefde en vriendschappen).
Zijn verhaal War Horse werd een zeer groot succes, zowel als boek als als toneelversie.
