P.G. WODEHOUSE

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse werd in 1881 geboren in Guildford, een stad ten zuiden van Londen. Hij zou één van de populairste humoristische schrijvers van Engeland van de twintigste eeuw worden.
P.G. Wodehouse groeide op in Guildford; zijn vader werkte als diplomaat in Hong Kong. De jonge Sir Wodehouse had een prima tijd op de middelbare (public) school. Na zijn schooltijd ging hij werken bij een bank, maar zijn hart lag bij het schrijven van verhaaltjes. Eerst schreef hij verhalen over school, maar later schreef hij humoristische fictie, een stijl waarmee hij wereldberoemd zou worden.
Mr Wodehouse bedacht typisch Engelse gentlemen zoals de steenrijke edelman Bertie Wooster, een man die nooit hoefde te werken. Diens dagelijkse problemen werden opgelost door zijn trouwe butler Jeeves – een voorbeeld van de perfecte butler, zoals deze later in veel boeken, TV-series en films zou worden uitgebeeld. Andere beroemde karakters waren Psmith en Mr Mulliner: echte exponenten van een Engels leven dat eigenlijk al lang niet meer bestond.
Hoewel Sir Wodehouse schreef over typisch Engelse karakters en situaties woonde hij zelf een groot deel van zijn leven in de USA, waar hij ook veel schreef: toneelstukken, TV- en filmscenario’s en andere literatuur (zowel fictie als non-fictie).
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog woonde hij een aantal jaren in Frankrijk, waar hij radio-uitzendingen verzorgde. Na de oorlog emigreerde hij voorgoed naar de USA, waar hij in 1975 op 93-jarige leeftijd overleed.
P.G. Wodehouse schreef ongelooflijk veel: meer dan 90 romans, 40 toneelstukken en 200 korte verhalen. Veel recensenten zagen zijn boeken niet als ‘literatuur’ maar de liefhebbers van zijn werk interesseerde dat niet: oud en jong, arm en rijk, beroemd en onbekend verslond zijn humoristische verhalen. Tegenwoordig worden zijn boeken overigens weinig meer gelezen.
