PETER ACKROYD

Peter Ackroyd (London, 1949) is een Britse – of beter, Engelse, of nog exacter, Londense – schrijver van historische romans, biografieën en non-fictie. Met zijn werken won hij meerdere prijzen en veel van zijn werk werd verfilmd voor de (BBC) TV.
Peter Ackroyd groeide op in Londen bij zijn moeder en oma in één van de armere wijken van de stad. Hij studeerde aan de universiteiten van Cambridge (GB) en aan Yale (USA). Hij werd al snel schrijver en boek recensent. Zijn voorkeur ligt bij (het schrijven van) non-fictie. Toch schreef hij ook (historisch getinte) romans – hoewel hij volgens eigen zeggen zijn eerste roman pas op zijn zesentwintigste las …
Mr Ackroyd woonde jaren lang samen met een mannelijke danser uit de USA totdat deze aan AIDS overleed.
