The world is charged with the grandeur of God.

IS HET BOEK VOOR JOU INTERESSANT?

De bundel ‘The Poems’ bevat alle gedichten van de dichter-priester Gerald Manley Hopkins. Die gedichten zijn razend knap, geweldig indrukwekkend – maar ook bijzonder lastig te lezen. Hopkins is wellicht één van de ‘moeilijkste’ dichters in de Engelse taal. Hij schreef alles in rijm – maar dan ook in allerlei soorten rijm bij elkaar: eindrijm, binnenrijm, alliteratie. Dat maakt de gedichten heel bijzonder, maar ook lastig te lezen zoals gezegd.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

‘The Poems’ zijn vooral religieuze gedichten qua thematiek. Hopkins was een zeer gelovig man die zijn gedichten vaak over, voor en aan God schreef. Het was waarschijnlijk nooit zijn bedoeling dat hij zo beroemd zou worden als dichter. Hij heeft het zelf in ieder geval niet meegemaakt.
In de gedichten bezingt Hopkins zijn liefde voor God en voor alles wat God gemaakt heeft: de natuur en al het leven daarin. Overigens worden zijn gedichten ook bewonderd door niet-gelovige (niet-Rooms-Katholieke) lezers.
Het sonnet is één van de specialiteiten van Hopkins, een dichtvorm die hij tot in de perfectie beheerste.

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘The Poems’ is heel moeilijk. Hopkins gebruikt vaak moeilijke woorden, hij verbindt woorden en zinnen/zinsdelen op ongebruikelijke wijze met en aan elkaar, hij maakt gebruik van archaïsche woorden en (in zijn tijd ook al) ouderwetse taal. Je moet het Engels uitzonderlijk goed beheersen wil je de gedichten begrijpen. Daarnaast heb je een grote fantasie nodig om de wereld van Hopkins te kunnen begrijpen.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de bundel heel moeilijk.
Dat geldt over het algemeen ook voor de gedichten. Sommige hebben ‘gewone’ onderwerpen (een oorlog, een boom, een hoefsmid), maar veel gedichten gaan over religieuze, filosofische of psychologische thema’s.
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘The Poems’ een boek met een literair niveau C 6d en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C2.

Schrijfstijl:

De gedichten zijn prachtig geschreven: een voorbeeld van perfecte poëzie. Maar nogmaals: je moet je er heel goed in verdiepen wil je er iets van begrijpen.
De gedichten geven mooie voorbeelden van rijm (alliteratie, binnenrijm, eindrijm). Het zijn allerlei verschillende dichtvormen, maar het sonnet is het meest bijzondere aan deze bundel.
