CAPTAIN W.E. JOHNS

William Earl Johns (1893-1968) was een Engelse piloot, die onder het pseudoniem Captain W.E. Johns zijn vele avonturenverhalen schreef, met name over de piloot Biggles. Hij had weinig opleiding en hij kwam uit een eenvoudig milieu, maar hij wist in de Eerste Wereldoorlog (1914-1918) piloot te worden, waarbij hij vloog en vocht in Engeland en in landen rond de Middellandse Zee (Egypte, Griekenland, Turkije). Hij stortte verschillende malen neer (of werd neergeschoten), maar hij overleefde alle crashes. In 1931 nam hij ontslag bij de Royal Air Force. Hij was overigens nooit ‘captain’.
Vanaf 1922 schreef Johns zeer veel avonturenboeken (zo’n 160), waarvan meer dan honderd over de eeuwig jeugdige piloot Biggles: een piloot die vocht in de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog en nog lang daarna. Zijn boeken waren zeer populair, met name bij jongens die geïnteresseerd waren in boeken over de luchtmacht tijdens de twee wereldoorlogen. Er werden clubs opgericht en op tweedehandsmarkten was – en is – het werk van Johns heel populair. Zelfs vandaag de dag zijn er uitgebreide en regelmatig bijgehouden websites over het leven en het werk van Captain W.E. Johns.
