The Twin of Sleep

Death is the twin of Sleep, they say:
For I shall rise renewed,
Free from the cramps of yesterday,
Clear-eyed and supple-thewed.

But though this bland analogy
Helps other folks to face
Decrepitude, senility,
Madness, disease, disgrace,

I do not like Death’s greedy looks:
Give me his twin instead –
Sleep never auctions off my books,

IS HET BOEK VOOR JOU INTERESSANT?

De bundel ‘Collected Poems’ bevat alle gedichten van de Engelse auteur Robert, een schrijver die zichzelf in de eerste plaats als dichter zag (hoewel hij bekender zou worden als schrijver van proza. De gedichten geven een weerslag van zijn ervaringen in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, zijn relaties en de plekken in Europa en Egypte die hij bezocht en die hij goed kende.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

‘Collected Poems’ is een verzameling gedichten die wisselend is qua moeilijkheidsgraad: simpele gedichten worden afgewisseld met heel complexe gedichten. Ze geven over het algemeen een goed tijdsbeeld van Groot-Brittannië in de periode 1910-1970 – een lange periode dus. Maar het gaat daarbij met name over de middle classes van Engeland, een toentertijd langzaamaan verdwijnende groep min of meer welgestelden (met ‘oud’ geld).

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘Collected Poems’ is wisselend voor wat betreft de taal: sommige gedichten zijn heel simpel, andere zijn heel lastig te lastig. De gedichten zijn traditioneel wat betreft metrum en rijm: het zijn vrijwel zonder uitzondering rijmende gedichten.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de dichtbundel wisselend, van heel eenvoudig tot heel complex.
Dat geldt zeker ook voor de betekenis van de gedichten zelf. Sommige zijn heel klassiek (en zelfs ook over ‘de Klassieken’, zoals de Grieken en Romeinen), anderen zijn heel down-to-earth (het gezinsleven, de oorlogsgedichten). Robert Graves ging er prat op dat hij zijn gedichten vele malen herschreef: het moge dus duidelijk zijn dat ze stuk voor stuk weldoordacht zijn. Daar komt nog bij dat hij deze ‘Collected Poems’ zelf allemaal uitzocht (meerdere malen tijdens zijn leven).
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘Collected Poems’ een boek met een literair niveau C 5d en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C1.
