John Buchan

 

JOHN BUCHAN

John Buchan  (1875-1940) was een Schotse romanschrijver. Daarnaast was hij historicus en politicus. Hij was baron van Tweedsmuir. En tenslotte werd hij de vijftiende Gouverneur van Canada, de hoogste vertegenwoordiger van de Britse vorst in Canada.
Na zijn studie (rechten) werd Buchan politicus en diplomaat, een carrière die hij in verschillende Britse koloniën in zuidelijk Afrika had. Hij was parlementslid in Londen voordat hij door de Britse koning George V werd benoemd tot gouverneur van Canada (in 1935). Die baan bekleedde hij tot zijn dood in 1940. Hij kreeg een staatbegrafenis in Canada en later werd zijn as teruggebracht naar Groot-Brittannië.
Naast deze indrukwekkende carrière is het onvoorstelbaar dat Buchan zo veel schreef: talloze historische werken, veel non-fictie, gedichtenbundels en voor al veel romans.
