John Rowe Townsend (1922-2014) was een Britse kinder- en jeugdboekenschrijver. Behalve boeken voor jongeren schreef Townsend ook boeken over kinder- en jeugdboeken. Mr Townsend werd geboren in Leeds. Hij studeerde aan de Universiteit van Cambridge. Als snel werd hij beroepsschrijver. Hij won veel prijzen met zijn werken; een aantal van zijn boeken werd verfilmd.
