Henry V heeft zijn wilde haren verloren. Als Prince Hal (Henry), de zoon van King Henry IV, was hij een schuinsmarcheerder die het liefst in de kroeg zat. Na de vroege dood van zijn vader blijkt hij een kundige vorst en legerleider te zijn geworden. Hij heeft trouwe volgelingen om zich heen (waaronder zijn broers).
Maar er zijn ook tegenstanders, zoals zijn vader die ook had. Henry besluit die opstandelingen op een listige manier uit te schakelen.
En wanneer dat gebeurd is, wacht hem een nog grotere klus. Zoals vroegere koningen en familieleden van hem, vindt hij dat hij aanspraak kan maken op (een deel van) Frankrijk. Dus valt hij dat land binnen: met een klein leger en met weinig overmacht.
Misschien zal het hem toch lukken om de Franse koning te verslaan. En anders is er misschien een verstandig (verstands?)huwelijk te sluiten …

King Henry V is een totaal andere man dan Prince Henry (‘Hal’) ooit was: de drinkebroer en schuinsmarcheerder is een verantwoordelijke vorst en een dappere legeraanvoerder geworden. In Henry IV Part II werd gezinspeeld op de terugkeer van Sir John Falstaff, maar in ‘King Henry V’ blijkt deze oplichter en zuipschuit ernstig verzwakt en ziek te zijn – en hij wordt niet meer (levend) ten tonele gevoerd.

De historical play ‘King Henry V’ vervolgt het verhaal van de koningen van Engeland. Zoals Henry IV vocht, eerst tegen zijn opstandige edellieden en later tegen de Franse koning, zo moet ook zijn zoon Henry V hetzelfde doen. In feite herhaalt de geschiedenis zich elke keer (want de Engelse vorsten vochten immers al eeuwen tegen de Franse koningen).

DE TAAL

King Henry: We would have all such offenders so cut off. And we give express charge that in our marches through the country there be nothing compell’d from the villages, nothing taken but paid for, none of the French upbraided or abused in disdainful language; for when lenity and cruelty play for a kingdom the gentler gamester is the soonest winner. (Act III, Scene VI)

De taal van ‘King Henry V’ is de poëtische taal van vorsten en edellieden, zo nu en dan onderbroken door leden van het ‘gewone’ volk. Uiteraard is het ook de taal van het eind van de zestiende eeuw en dat maakt het toneelstuk soms moeilijk leesbaar.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

King Henry: Even so. What are you?
Pistol: As good a gentleman as the Emperor.
King Henry: Then you are a better than the King.
Pistol: The King’s a bawcock and a heart of gold,
A lad of life, an imp of fame;
Of parents good, of fist most valiant.
I kiss his dirty shoe, and from heart-string
I love the lovely bully. What is thy name?
King Henry: Harry le Roy.
Pistol: Le Roy! a Cornish name; art thou of Cornish crew?
King Henry: No, I am a Welshman. (Act IV, Scene I)

Qua taal is het toneelstuk vaak lastig. Het verhaal is dat niet echt. Naast de ernstige zaken (veldslagen, verraad en geweld) is er ook ruimte voor comic relief.
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘King Henry V’ een boek met een literair niveau C 5d en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C2.

Schrijfstijl:

Hostess: As ever you come of women, come in quickly to Sir John. Ah, poor heart! he is so shak’d of a burning quotidian tertian that it is most lamentable to behold. Sweet men, come to him.
Nym: The King hath run bad humours on the knight; that’s the even of it.
Pistol: Nym, thou hast spoke the right; his heart is fracted and corroborate. (Act II, Scene II)

Howel in een historical play meestal de ernst van de geschiedenis de boventoon voert (oorlogen en strijd) heeft Shakespeare meestal wel tijd voor enig comic relief. In de vorige stukken over Henry IV was dat door de strapatsen van Sir John Falstaff. Die ligt nu op sterven – maar zijn vroegere maatjes hebben nauwelijks oog voor diens ellende en ze bespreken zijn ziekte met veel humor en met de nodige (medische) versprekingen.

‘King Henry V’ bevat een verhaal met (buiten beeld) veel actie. Die actie is vrijwel volledig off-stage: het zijn meerdere veldslagen met veel doden en gewonden.

Tijd:

King Henry: We must not only arm t’ invade the French,
But lay down our proportions to defend
Against the Scot, who will make road upon us
With all advantages. (Act I, Scene II)

De gebeurtenissen in de roman spelen zich af in de jaren 1400-1425. King Henry leefde van 1386-1422 en hij regeerde van 1413-1422. Tijdens die regeerperiode moest hij afrekenen met de traditionele vijanden van het Engelse koningshuis: de Schotten, andere opstandelingen uit het noorden en de Fransen.
