Hawk Roosting

I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed.
Inaction, no falsifying dream
Between my hooked head and hooked feet:
Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.

The convenience of the high trees!
The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray
Are of advantage to me;
And the earth's face upward for my inspection.

My feet are locked upon the rough bark.
It took the whole of Creation
To produce my foot, my each feather:
Now I hold Creation in my foot

Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly -
I kill where I please because it is all mine.
There is no sophistry in my body:
My manners are tearing off heads -

The allotment of death.
For the one path of my flight is direct
Through the bones of the living.
No arguments assert my right:

The sun is behind me.
Nothing has changed since I began.
My eye has permitted no change.
I am going to keep things like this.

De bundel ‘New Selected Poems’ bevat gedichten uit de eerste 14 bundels van Ted Hughes, gedichten uit zijn belangrijkste periode als dichter. De gedichten gaan over zeer diverse onderwerpen: de natuur, leven en dood, liefde en relaties, geschiedenis en fantasie. Elke lezer die iets met gedichten heeft zal hierin wel iets van haar/zijn gading kunnen vinden.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

‘New Selected Poems’ bevat de belangrijkste gedichten uit de meest productieve periode van de dichter. Ted Hughes was een belangrijke Britse dichter; hij werd niet voor niets Poet Laureate aan het eind van zijn leven.
Dat leven was zo nu en dan turbulent. Hij had meerdere relaties. Zo was hij onder andere gehuwd met de Amerikaanse dichteres Sylvia Plath, een vrouw die al op jonge leeftijd zelfmoord pleegde. Hughes woonde op meerdere plaatsen, maar vrijwel altijd op het Britse platteland, waar hij zijn inspiratie vaak vandaan haalde. In zijn gedichten ontleedde hij soms de wreedheid van leven en dood (zoals een dier door een ander dier verscheurd wordt).

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘New Selected Poems’ is meestal niet echt moeilijk. Soms gebruikt Hughes vrij onbekende woorden, maar meestal lijkt de poëtische taal van de dichter nog het meest op spreektaal.
De gedichten rijmen zelden. Wel is het metrum soms strak en ook worden door Hughes dichterlijke vormen en symbolen gebruikt, zoals alliteratie en beeldspraak.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de bundel heel toegankelijk. Let wel dat Mr Hughes geen blad voor de mond neemt: hij kan erg plastisch en soms confronterend schrijven.
De gedichten zijn vaak toegankelijk wat onderwerpen betreft. De oudere gedichten zijn wat dat aangaat traditioneler: veel gaan over historische thema’s of over de natuur. In latere bundels is Mr Hughes harder (en soms platter): zijn ideeën over geloof, liefde en relaties zullen niet iedere lezer aanspreken. Desalniettemin zijn deze gedichten vaak heel indrukwekkend en geven ze een goed beeld van de dichter en van zijn tijd(genoten).
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘New Selected Poems’ een boek met een literair niveau C 4c en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C1.

Schrijfstijl:

Veel gedichten zijn indrukwekkend. Vooral de gedichten over de natuur zullen veel lezers aanspreken: het is soms alsof er een boer aan het woord is die zijn werk en observaties in poëzie heeft weergegeven. Ted Hughes kende het leven op het platteland dan ook als geen ander.
