De bundel ‘Poems and Songs’ bevat alle bekende en minder bekende gedichten (die hij zelf vaak ‘songs’ en ‘airs’ noemde) van de Schotse dichter Robert Burns. Hij bezingt daarin de liefde, de (Schotse) natuur en het leven.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

Veel gedichten in ‘Poems and Songs’ zijn heel beroemd geworden. Niet alleen als nationalistische teksten voor de Schotten (‘My Love Is in the Highlands’), maar ook als inspiratie voor andere literatuur (‘Comin thro’ the rye’, ‘To a Mouse’; ‘John Barleycorn’, ‘Tam O’Shanter’), de liefde (‘My Love Is like a Red, Red Rose’) of als wereldwijd bekend oud- en nieuwjaarslied: ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘Poems and Songs’ is goed te begrijpen, maar je moet veel teksten wel hardop lezen. Het Schotse dialect van het Engels (of is het een taal?) wijkt hier en daar behoorlijk af van het RP (‘Received Pronunciation’, een soort ABE – ‘Algemeen Beschaafd’ Engels).
De gedichten zijn over het algemeen kort – met uitzondering van de balladen.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de dichtbundel soms lastig, maar wel te lezen.
Dat geldt zeker ook voor de gedichten: ze lezen vaak als korte verhalen: verhalen over een meisje, een jongen, een overleden vriend, een strijder, een dier, een rivier of meer, een berg, iets anders uit de natuur. En heel veel gaan uiteraard over de liefde …
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘Poems and Songs’ een boek met een literair niveau C 5a en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C1.

Schrijfstijl:

De gedichten zijn eenvoudig van structuur: rijmende coupletten, vaak gevolgd door een (eveneens rijmend) refrein. Ze zijn heel uitermate geschikt om op muziek te zetten – en dat is dan ook heel regelmatig gebeurd.
