VIRGINIA HAMILTON

De Amerikaanse jeugdboekenschrijfster Virginia Hamilton (1936-2002) was een Afro-Amerikaanse auteur die vooral schreef over de positie van de Amerikanen van kleur. Ze schreef meer dan veertig boeken; veel daarvan wonnen prijzen, vaak ook internationale.
Virginia Hamilton groeide op in Yellow Springs, Ohio, waar haar familie al meer dan honderd jaar woonde, eerst als ontsnapte slaven uit het zuiden van de USA. Later verhuisde Ms Hamilton naar New York City, waar ze trouwde met de dichter Arnold Adoff. Ze keerde met haar man en kinderen terug naar de boerderij waar ze was opgegroeid. Terwijl haar man daar als boer werkte, schreef zij haar jeugdboeken.
