WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), één van de belangrijkste Britse dichters van de twintigste eeuw, werd in de buurt van de Ierse hoofdstad Dublin in 1865 geboren uit een geslacht van Engelse landeigenaren die al langere tijd in Ierland woonden. Zijn familie was Anglicaans, bijzonder in een land waar vrijwel iedereen Rooms-Katholiek was. Zijn vakanties bracht hij door op het West-Ierse platteland wat hem een grote liefde voor het Ierse platteland bijbracht: hij zou zijn hele leven dichten over dat platteland en er verhalen over verzamelen.
Tijdens zijn studie ontmoette hij Maud Gonne, een Ierse nationalist, een vrouw die misschien wel zijn grote liefde zou blijken te zijn. Maud Gonne wees hem twee maal af; zij kregen wel een kortstondige verhouding, maar zowel Miss Gonne als Yeats zouden met iemand anders trouwen (Yeats pas op zijn eenenvijftigste).
Politiek en idealistisch had Yeats zijn hart verpand aan de Ierse zaak – een land dat toen nog tot Groot-Brittannië behoorde. Hij steunde de strijd voor onafhankelijkheid en hij schreef er veel over. Als Ier van Engelse hoge komaf was dit uitzonderlijk.
William Butler Yeats stichtte een theater in Dublin en hij werd uiteindelijk senator van de Irish Free State. Toch bleef hij bij de gegoede burgerij (lees: landadel) behoren: hij had veel bezit in Ierland en hij verkeerde veel in adellijke kringen.
In 1923 ontving William Butler Yeats de Nobelprijs voor literatuur.
