UPTON SINCLAIR
De Amerikaanse schrijver Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. (1878-1968) was naast schrijver ook politiek actief. Hij schreef meer dan 100 boeken in verschillende genres (romans, non-fictie, drama). In zijn romans stelt hij vaak een misstand in de Amerikaanse samenleving aan de orde (zoals de vleesverwerkende industrie in de roman The Jungle), een misstand die vaak later door de pers of door de overheid werd opgepakt. Vanwege de actualiteit van zijn romans destijds kun je zijn boeken als historische romans lezen. In 1943 won Upton SInclair de Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Upton Sinclair werd in 1878 in Baltimore (Maryland) geboren in een familie van Europese immigranten die al sinds de zeventiende eeuw in Amerika woonden. Toch was het gezin niet rijk; het verhuisde naar New York City waar men hoopte op beter werk en meer inkomen. De jonge Sinclair schreef al heel jong verhalen en onderhield daarmee zijn ouders. Hij studeerde later rechten aan Columbia University, maar hij wilde schrijver worden. Dat lukte: ondanks een drukbezette carrière schreef hij ongelooflijk veel – en met veel succes. Vaak schreef hij meerdere romans in één jaar.
Sinclair trouwde drie maal en hij woonde met zijn echtgenoten op meerdere plaatsen in de USA.
