IS HET BOEK VOOR JOU INTERESSANT?

Voor de liefhebbers van verhalende gedichten is ‘Come on Everybody’ een aanrader. Adrian Mitchell is niet een traditionele dichter die met strakke rijmschema’s en vaste dichtvormen werkt: veel van zijn gedichten lezen als kleine verhaaltjes. Mr Mitchell wil met zijn gedichten vooral een boodschap overbrengen.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

Voor het waarderen van de bundel ‘Come on Everybody’ moet je je toch wel verdiepen in de tijd waarin de meest indringende gedichten geschreven werden. Mr Mitchell maakt zich zorgen/druk om politieke misstanden, om rassenongelijkheid, om klassenverschillen, zowel op school als in de maatschappij. Vooral zijn felle aanklachten uit de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw zijn beroemd geworden.

DE TAAL

De woorden en de zinnen in ‘Come on Everybody’ zijn niet erg moeilijk te volgen: Adrian Mitchell gebruikt zo veel mogelijk gewone spreektaal in zijn poëzie.
De gedichten zij van zeer verschillende lengtes: sommige gedichten zijn veel pagina’s lang, anderen zijn maar een paar regels.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

De taal van ‘Come on Everybody’ is heel toegankelijk en de bundel maakt goed duidelijk hoe dichters probeerden heel dicht bij de gewone man of vrouw te blijven: er wordt veel gewone spreektaal gebruikt.
De gedichten hebben vrij heldere thema’s: de toestand in Groot-Brittannië in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw. Daarbij gaat het heel vaak om zaken waar de dichter zich kwaad over maakt: onrechtvaardigheid, oneerlijkheid, klassenongelijkheid.
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘Come on Everybody’ een boek met een literair niveau C 4c en een taal-(ERK-)niveau B2.

Schrijfstijl:

Adrian Mitchell is een dichter voor het ‘gewone volk’: hij heeft geen enkele boodschap aan literatuurrecensenten of andere deskundigen. Dat blijkt ook uit de bundel ‘Come on Everybody’: Mr Mitchell maakt maar al te vaak duidelijk wat hij van snobs en andere betweters denkt.
