IS HET BOEK VOOR JOU INTERESSANT?

‘The Complete Poems’ is een verzameling beroemde, maar ook vaak verwarrende en complexe gedichten. Whitman was een dichter die veel gedichten herschreef, maar ze werden er daardoor vaak niet altijd eenvoudiger op. Desalniettemin is dit een bundel van één van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste Amerikaanse dichters uit de negentiende eeuw.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

Voor het waarderen van ‘The Complete Poems’ moet je openstaan voor een experimentele dichter. Hoewel Whitman gewone spreektaal gebruikt, leiden zijn gedichten regelmatig tot verwarring en onbegrip. Vaak gaan gedichten over (jonge) mannen – maar zijn het erotische gedichten? Vaak gaat het over politiek – maar is het kritisch of juist niet? Veel gedichten roepen meer vragen op dan zij beantwoorden. Wel zijn een aantal van de gedichten van Whitman tot de canon van de Amerikaanse poëzie gaan behoren (zie bijvoorbeeld: ’O Captain! my Captain!’)

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘The Complete Poems’ is soms lastig (met archaïsche woorden als ‘thou’ en ‘thy’), maar over het algemeen zul je de betekenis van een gedicht wel begrijpen.
Veel gedichten zijn heel lang.
Daarnaast is te merken dat Mr. Whitman zijn gedichten continu herschreef of herzag: ze zijn zorgvuldig geconstrueerd.
De meeste gedichten zijn in free verse geschreven; rijm zul je zelden tegenkomen. Het ritme in het metrum daarentegen is heel helder.

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de dichtbundel niet altijd even gemakkelijk, maar wel te begrijpen.
De gedichten zelf zijn voor een deel ook een raadsel. En dat maakt ze zo boeiend: je kunt een gedicht heel vaak op meerdere manieren interpreteren. Soms gaan gedichten over een kapitein – maar dat blijkt dan President Lincoln te zijn. Soms gaat een gedicht over een soldaat – maar dat blijkt dan een liefdesgedicht te zijn. Het was bij Walt Whitman vaak onduidelijk of hij zijn liefdesgedichten aan mannen schreef (dat was in zijn tijd trouwens ook een doodzonde), maar een gedicht met meerdere uitlegmogelijkheden geeft op den duur meer voldoening aan de lezer.
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘The Complete Poems’ een boek met een literair niveau C 5a en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C1.

De gedichten zijn mooi, zorgvuldig geschreven en vaak mysterieus en boeiend van thema.
