IS HET BOEK VOOR JOU INTERESSANT?

De verzamelbundel ‘The Collected Poems’ bevat alle gedichten die van T.S. Eliot werden gepubliceerd. Mr Eliot werd met name bekend vanwege zijn indrukwekkende gedichtencyclus ‘The Waste Land’. Maar vele jaren later zouden gedichten uit een andere bundel (‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’) worden bewerkt tot één van de meest succesvolle musicals aller tijden: ‘Cats’.

WAT MOET JE WETEN?

‘The Collected Poems’ bevat zeer uiteenlopende gedichten: diepgravende over relaties en geloof, over dood en liefde, maar ook heel luchtige over een familie of over een bepaald dier (zoals een kat). T.S. Eliot was van oorsprong een Amerikaan die tot Engelsman werd genaturaliseerd. Over zijn nieuwe vaderland schreef hij later met veel liefde in zijn gedichten.

DE TAAL

De taal van ‘The Collected Poems’ is soms lastig. Er zijn lange, maar zeer indrukwekkende gedichten (The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’), maar ook korte over een poes (‘Gus: The Theatre Cat’). Regelmatig is het thema ‘geloof’: Mr Eliot was een zeer (Christelijk) gelovig man die mooie gedichten schreef die vaak op Bijbelse verhalen waren geïnspireerd (‘The Journey of the Magi’). Veel gedichten rijmen; vaak is dat eindrijm, maar soms is dat een ander rijm (binnenrijm, alliteratie, of een andere rijmvorm).

DE TAAL EN HET VERHAAL

Qua taal is de bundel regelmatig moeilijk.
Dat geldt zeker ook voor de gedichten zelf. Veel gedichten zijn heel associatief waardoor je heel goed moet opletten wat je leest.
Op basis van deze eigenschappen is ‘The Collected Poems’ een boek met een literair niveau C 5d en een taal-(ERK-)niveau C1.

Schrijfstijl:

Veel gedichten zijn prachtig geschreven: heel zorgvuldig en compact. Andere zijn meer in schrijftaal geschreven.
Veel dichtregels zijn later gebruikt door andere auteurs: Doris Lessing, Stephen King. Maar ook veel dichtregels vormen echo’s van andere, oudere auteurs: William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Andrew Marvell, of andere klassieke dichters (Griekse of Romeinse).
